Pride Divides Us
James 4:6b “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.
What does it tell us about God that He opposes the proud?

God openly stands against us if we are prideful. If we trust ourselves more than Christ, we declare battle with God. If pride causes fights, then humility brings peace. If we want our relationships with our family members to improve, then we need to practice humility. God will empower us to change if we humble ourselves before Him.

We all like things done right, or as we like to call it, my way. Compromise is something we want others to practice. Pride is so powerful, we can be annoyed with others, even when we know we are in the wrong.

We are in year three of Covid and the divorce rate has gone up. Families have been spending a lot more time together and it’s not always producing good results. Sometimes we just need some space. Especially when our spouse won’t admit that I’m always right. So, how can we change and grow in humility? I think it starts with not relying on ourselves to be appreciated. When we serve, we serve the Lord, not just others.

James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

God is pretty good at bringing about situations where our pride is challenged and exposed. Every time we go head-to-head with God, we will lose. But if we humble ourselves before an all-powerful God, in His time, He will lift us up.
In our everyday lives, what does it look like to surrender to the Lord?
