What Is Abundant Life?
In what areas of life do you find yourself trying to control your future, your experiences, and the people around you?
John 10:10b I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
A more abundant life doesn’t mean getting what we want, when and how we want it. It doesn’t mean a great job or great health, so we shouldn’t expect to be able to place an order and get what we want. Unfortunately, we have an enemy who is a known successful schemer and liar pushing us in this direction, so we continue to see ourselves as Gods.
Genesis 3:4-5 4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
Only God get’s to decide what’s good and what’s evil. The devil wants us to believe the lie, that we get to make that weighty decision. But we’re not God no matter how hard we protest. If we are willing to trust God, we can become Godly, not God.
Genesis 5:22-23 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
Spiritual maturity includes the fruit of the Spirit. So, when we experience brokenness, loss, or frustration, we don’t have to believe the lie that we are just victims to our circumstances. Instead, we can pray “Lord help me to suffer well.” This kind of mindset will remind us that life is not about us, it’s about our Lord and His purposes. Remember, history is ‘His-story’. Abundant life is experienced when we are growing in the fruit of the Spirit even if things aren’t going the way we want them to go. If we can trust God for our future, we can trust Him for our present.
