Identity Lost and Found

Romans 6:23

Experience Victory over Darkness (Series)

Genesis 1:27-31 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground— everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.”

They could eat from the tree of life and live forever. They had safety, security, and significance. When God created Eve He established human community. A meaningful sharing relationship with one another.

Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death

Adam and Eve lost relationship with God through sin and the effects of their fall were immediate and far reaching. When they ate they died spiritually and then physically. They tried to hide From God. That reveals A faulty understanding of who God is since God is omnipresent. So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.

Genesis 2-18-21 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. 20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

The essence of sin is man living independently of God who meets all our needs as we live out life in Christ. The Hebrew concept of knowledge implied an intimate, personal relationship. When Adam and Eve sinned, they lost a true knowledge of God. God’s original design for knowledge was relational.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 3:12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. As we gain a true understanding of our identity in Christ, fear and guilt will be replaced by spiritual confidence.

Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

We can experience freedom and purpose when we don’t listen to the enemy’s lies that are expressed in our culture.
