Humility Keeps Us Standing
Is there any area of your life where pride has gotten a foothold? What do you think caused this to happen?
1 Peter 5:5-7 Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Sometimes we find ourselves experiencing more success than normal. It doesn’t take much to get full of ourselves. But we all know what comes after pride. What is pride? A wrong understanding of ourselves. What we need is a right perspective of who we are and who God is in our lives. When we see God for who He really is, it’s possible to see our need for Him in all areas. Getting a right perspective starts with faith in Jesus. If God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, then we should know what to be on the watch for, in our lives. Pride is so ugly, and it is so out of place in the presence of a loving God. When we struggle with pride, the only appropriate and effective way forward is repentance. Humility is a choice worth making. It prepares us to be lifted up by God, in a way that won’t puff us up. When we puff ourselves up, we will eventually pop, and that’s never pretty.

Taking credit for things God does through us is pride. Humility isn’t thinking of ourselves less, or less of ourselves. Humility is thinking of God and others more. We need to be ready to change our perspective about ourselves when things are going well.

Don’t believe your own hype, instead be quick to focus on where your blessings come from. Take some time to evaluate your life and ask God to reveal any areas of your life where pride has blurred your vision and repent. Remember, God will speak to us through His word if we are willing to listen.
What is the Holy Spirit saying to you through the word?
