Hook, Line, And Sinner!

Hook, Line, And Sinner!

James 1:13-15
And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

I spent my summers fishing with my grandfather in Eugene, Oregon. If he cast his line two times without a bite, he would change the bait. He didn’t go fishing, he caught fish. It didn’t matter if it was stream, lake, or even deep sea, wherever he put in a line to entice, he would drag away another one because he knew where the fish were and what they wanted.

Where is Satan setting the bait in your life?

He is an expert sinner-man who knows how to entice his catch. He knows our emotional, relational, and spiritual weaknesses. He knows how to hook us by baiting sin with just the right lie, and just when we believe that lie, he pulls hard and sets the hook.

So, what is the bait that entices you? What cravings consistently get you to try and nibble without taking the hook? What is the lie that you consistently fall for from the Sinner-man who knows just when to pull the line and set the hook.

So how do we keep from taking the bait?

2 Corinthians 10:12-13
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

If we humble ourselves and follow instead of trying to lead, we can turn to God’s truth and power, rather than blaming our circumstances. Choosing God’s lifegiving truth, leads us to the safe deep waters of being filled with the Spirit instead of the deceiving bait.
