Hey Worry Wart

Hey Worry Wart

This last week many of my conversations with people have revolved around the area of worry. I have personally spent much of the last few nights failing to sleep because I’m worrying for friends in the church and my family.  I’ll role over quickly with new ideas of how to rescue someone from the consequences of a poor decision.  Morning arrives and the clock reminds me that my time was poorly spent.

We learn to worry through experiences, examples and broken expectations.

I’ve noticed that my youngest daughter spends the last few minutes before we leave for the school bus, watching the clock seemingly without blinking.  As the clock clicks to 8:03am, she frantically moves towards the door with bag and lunch already in hand, moving at a quickening pace until she finally reaches her destination, the bus stop, half a block away.  The next five to eight minutes she catches her breath, plays in the gravel with one foot while saying a few words to some of the other kids who are waiting for the top of the bus to appear over the hill to the East.  Then most of the kids say in unison, as if they were reciting their line in a play, “It’s here”.  Mission accomplished, daughters on the bus, I look through the window and watch my youngest sit down, take a long deep breath and close her eyes as if to thank God for a successful morning. You see, once last month we had to run to make the bus and my daughters learned to fear being late and embarrassed.

Are we destined to a life of heartburn, cold sweats and raised blood pressure?

Philippians 4:6-7

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”

Instead of stewing over worries we need to talk to God about what’s on our hearts and trust that He can do something about it.  Go to God in prayer and leave it there.
